VUT — Energy sustainability and waste management obligations: what is checked during an inspection

VUTs in Andalusia are required to inform guests about measures taken to reduce energy consumption and manage waste correctly. Not a formal certification: it is sufficient to demonstrate reasonable measures during an inspection. The forthcoming Sustainable Tourism Act will strengthen this requirement.

Andalusian tourism regulations require tourist establishments, including Tourist Use Properties (VUT), to inform guests about measures taken to reduce energy consumption and manage waste appropriately.

What is required in practice

This is not a mandatory energy certification. The obligation is met by demonstrating reasonable measures:

  • Recycling information: clear instructions on selective waste separation in the municipality (leaflet, notice or digital information).
  • Energy-saving mechanisms: programmable thermostat, automatic light sensors, appliance usage instructions.
  • Documentation: installation invoices, photographs or guest manuals kept as evidence for inspections.

Operational recommendation

Include a sustainability section in the welcome guide with: nearest recycling points, thermostat instructions and energy-saving measures adopted. This document serves as evidence during an inspection.
